Writing in the British Medical Journal, BMJ Christmas issue, Dr Nathan Grills, from Monash University asks "is Santa Claus a public health pariah?" Grills writes that: "Santa only needs to affect health by 0.1 per cent to damage millions of lives." We should be using his popularity to promote healthy living urges Grills, who backs up his argument with a review of literature and web-based material on the jolly fat man's potential negative impact on public health (funnily enough he found no peer-reviewed papers on this).

Why Fats Are OK

Fat in our diet has a bad press. It has been fashionable for decades now to castigate fats as being inherently bad for us, both for our general health and, as the main cause of people becoming overweight. Of the three main types of food that we eat (fat, carbohydrates and protein) fat is most easily stored as fat in the body and has double the calorific value of carbohydrates and protein, BUT, it is only a threat to our health if consumed in excessive amounts. Since the large amount of publicity given to fat being bad for us, food manufacturers have been providing many low-fat and fat-free foods. What is not generally appreciated is that these low-fat foods are often very high in carbohydrate content, and excessive carbohydrate consumption is equally bad for our health and our waist line.

FDA Expands Presence Outside U.S. With Opening Of Mexico City Post

As part of its continuing effort to buttress food and medical product safety in this country by working with its regulatory partners overseas, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the opening of its Mexico City post. This is the Agency's third post in Latin America and its tenth international post in the past 13 months. "The opening of this office represents an important step as we re-design our product safety strategy. We, like our partners in the Mexican Government, realize that prevention is the key. For example, more than a third of the fresh fruits and vegetables we eat come from Mexico as do a large amount of our medical devices.

Osteoporosis is one of those things you just don't mess with, especially for women. In fact, more women die of fractures caused by osteoporosis than from breast cancer, cervical cancer, and uterine cancer combined. My interest in this elusive disease of the bone has been increasing over the years, as I watch my grandma suffer from it. She has a lot of the characteristic signs of osteoporosis: the hump on her back, relentless aches and pains, and difficulty getting around. Her doctors tell her to take more calcium and have tried her on various prescription drugs designed to reduce bone loss, but to no avail. Since I will one day be a post-menopausal woman, I decided that I had better figure out how to prevent osteoporosis now, while I am still in my thirties.
