Belly dancing comes in many varieties and among the most popular is Istanbul belly dancing. Nightclubs are popular showcases for this beautiful variation of the art.

This energetic and beautiful form of belly dancing is tied directly to the history and culture of Turkey, which is being exported to the point of having a world wide impact. Though it has solid roots in Turkey it has changed into its present form as it migrates and interacts with the cultures that embrace it.

In spite of this melting pot effect with other belly dancing forms, there remains very distinct characteristic that is entirely unique to this the Istanbul style. This is especially true in the area of wardrobe since the dance was originally part of fertility festivals and was not to be seen by men.

The Wardrobe

The unique characteristic of the Istanbul style is that it emphasizes the legs predominantly. Therefore the wardrobe is made up of rather lengthy skirts with high slits up the sides. The skirts can be worn with many types of shoes from slippers to platforms and even high heels.

The other wardrobe piece specific to Turkish belly dancing is the Zils. They are tiny cymbals that are played by the thumb and fore fingers, one pair for each hand. And it is claimed that mastery of this style of dance is when the dancer can play the Zils and dance simultaneously, which as you can imagine is a lot to coordinate, but it is beautiful to watch and enjoy.

When compared to other forms of belly dancing Istanbul style has far more freedom and is much more energetic. So instead of the usual sensual and sultry serpentine style, Istanbul's for allows the dancers the freedom of floor work and pelvic thrusts, which is a no-no in more strict styles such as Egyptian belly dancing.

Modern Influence

It is important to note that Istanbul belly dancing is still alive and well inside modern Turkey where it remains an intrinsic part of the culture. From weddings to male circumcision ceremonies, dancers are used to perform the customary dances in celebration of many major life events. And it is still featured on TV with dancers being adored with celebrity status both in Turkey and world wide.
