The Glory of a Man

What is it that makes a man? Typically when I use the word, "man" I speak of mankind. However in this instance I am talking about men. What makes a man? While some good answers may come to mind, the reality is that men often think of their careers, positions, possessions, reputations, etc. to define who they are. The truth is that the world itself thinks that way. Society honors men of great standing, often times regardless of their moral character. There are men who repeatedly cheat on their wives, but who are held in very high esteem. So being in a society that is willing to look at these external attributes to define a man, it is not surprising that men think less of themselves if they do not meet these requirements.

These things are not what makes a man however. The glory of a man is what keeps a man standing even if his world around him falls apart. The glory of a man is what cheers him on when he is trying to excel in this world. The glory of a man is what a man thinks about when he makes life decisions. The glory of a man is his wife!

Yes, it is often that we see a man come to the forefront to receive the honors, but in the background there is a wife who stood by his side all along the way. Women have great influence over their men. There is nothing like a wife's encouragement. The day a woman stops encouraging a man, that is the day his glory fades. Encouragement should not be confused with scolding or reprimanding. If a woman realizes that her words of encouragement are enough to push a man to the finish line, she will use those words. Wives are the glory of their men. If a wife does not see any forward movement in her man, try continuous encouragement (not nagging) to get him moving. When all I had was a high school diploma, my wife would tell me, "you are so intelligent, you can easily get your degree in...". That is much better than, "why don't you do something with your life?!"

Men, this means that wives need to be honored. How often do men hurt and dishonor the very one who is supposed to be their glory? Men often have their male friends who they hang out with, or their games and golf trips that they eagerly look forward to, but seldom do they look for ways to get away with their wives. And that is a point of weakness in the stature of a man. In so many cultures, women are the mere possessions of men. Show me a society where women are mistreated and I will show you a society that is failing economically, socially and progressively. Darkness surrounds such societies. On the other hand, find a man who treats his wife like a jewel and I will show you what prosperity is.

The Bible admonishes men to love their wives as Christ loves His Church. And with that in mind, I love my wife not only in words, but in action. It was the action of self-sacrifice that characterizes the love of Christ and that is what I try to live. Putting her first is what has become my lifelong goal. My wife has been my biggest cheerleader and where I am today has much to do with her encouraging instead of scolding. Her respect and honor of me as her husband has been the fuel burning within me to aim high. Truly, I cannot see how a man can reach his goals and see his dreams come through without his wife's help. When the two are together, there is not much that can stand in their way.

This works the other way around too. There is nothing like a husband encouraging his wife to go after her dreams. Remember the self-sacrifice. This may require the husband taking care of the children and preparing meals while the wife studies or give attention to whatever she is aiming for. But back to the topic; the glory of a man is his wife. When men treat their women as if they hold the most value in their lives, their lives will truly be enriched.
