Love Is Just Another Four Letter Word

Love is just a four letter word to many people. It is used so frequently, it has kind of lost its meaning. In many respects, a person using the word "love" may as well use a four letter expletive, because they are meaningless, too.

Just think of the times you use the word "love". You might say, I would love a cuppa, right now. Or, I would love a drink. Or,I would love to be having a holiday.Or, I would love to be lying on a beach. Or, I would love to have a bath. Or, I would love to have a baby . Or, I would love an icecream. Or, I would love some fruit. The list of examples just goes on.

What do you mean when you say, I would love..? You could say I would like, because this is really what you are saying. Like is often confused for love and, because of this, the word love loses its real meaning. Consequently, when people tell other people that they love them, there is a lot of distrust and confusion. Yet surprisingly, there is this longing within everybody to be loved, or, maybe, to even love.

The need to be loved is often seen when people are seeking attention. Attention seekers feel that if they are not being noticed they are not being loved. Often people have such a craving for attention that they will doing virtually anything to become the focus of attention. Certain celebrities crave to hear their name mentioned on the radio, and to have articles written about them in the newspapers, and see pictures of themselves on the television to such an extent that they will stage anything to get a headline. Usually it is something that will bring them discredit, dishonor, and infamy, but often the fame is seen as worth the shame, because it will bring sympathy, pity and attention to themselves. Without this, these attention seekers feel unwanted, unneeded. and unloved.

Where is the love in attention seeking? Where is the love in wanting everybody to be focused on yourself? If that is your desire. Yes, you might say that this is evidence that people love you because you are the focus of attention, but if this is the case, do they really love you? Maybe people are just curious and you mistake this attention for being loved.

A baby usually gets attention in what seems like unlimited amounts. However, as the baby grows older and there are other children in the house, the amount of attention that was devoted to the baby starts to dwindle. Sole children grow up often getting all the attention they want. Then when they get older, they find themselves feeling unloved because they are no longer the center of attention. So is attention really love? Is the only child no longer loved because no one pays attention any more?

Some television stars often become the focus of people's attention to such an extent that they cannot understand why people do not love them and leave them alone. Instead of being able to walk down the street in peace, they get accosted, kissed, hugged and mobbed to such an extent that they need minders to help them walk and shop in public. If only these morons would leave me alone! has been expressed more than once. But people feel that these actors are known by them because they watch them every day in their lounge or bedroom, and believe that they love these strangers more than anyone else in the world.

A person does not have to be a television star to get this sort of adulation. Princess Diana of Wales was supposedly loved by so many people that their lives fell apart when she died. No longer were the women's magazines able to provide them with a goddess, who lived an ideal life above the average person, for them to drool over, admire, revere and idolize, because they could find nothing else to do with their miserable lives. Really, can you call this love? Yet many people claimed they loved her, even though they did not know her or had never met her. Could love mean to live a fantasy?

Really, what is love? Is love a concept which can have a meaning that lasts forever, or is love a four letter word that is used to express human likes, wants, needs, desires and lusts in their many forms?

Where is the love of parents for children who grow up always seeking attention but not wanting to give of their time to help the less fortunate? Where is the love when a man and a woman say I love you to each other in the form of marriage vows, but then end up divorcing? Where is the love when one person physically injures another person for the sake of it? Where is the love when somebody steals or damages your personal belongings? Where is the love when someone bears false witness against you, or you bear false witness against another?

The way the word is used today, it is no wonder that people might scratch their heads and ask, Is love just another four letter word?
