Origin of Contact Lenses

Buying contact lenses can be a very exciting time for a person because it changes the way they see everything. The world can be seen in a way that has little distortion, things are their correct size, and all is seen at the proper distances. In a way, it is a type of shell shock when the contacts are in and the person sees the world for the first time through them. But who invented the contact lens? Where did it come from? These are good questions since it is a mystery as to who developed the concept of the contact lens. However, you may be surprised at the history of these little round pieces of plastic that allows millions of people to see the world as it is. The reason why it is a debate as to who developed the concept is because Leonardo da Vinci had sketched what he thought a lens that fits over the eye should look like. Then Rene Descartes came up with the idea of the contact lens in 1632. Of course at that time, nothing ever came of it until 1801 when Thomas Young developed a way to correct his own vision.

Why Do I Need An Implant After Cataract Surgery And What's The Best One Out There?

Every one who undergoes cataract surgery gets an IOL (intraocular lens implant) unless there is a complication that prevents it. In the old days we did not have IOLs, and patients had to wear those thick "coke-bottle" glasses afterwards. The reason is that the cataract is actually a hazy lens. This lens is crystal clear when we are born, and every year of life adds a little haze to it. The lens has focusing power, just like the lens in glasses. If the lens has the perfect power you need, you will not need glasses. If the lens does not have the perfect power your eye needs, you have to wear glasses to see clearly. During cataract surgery, we remove that lens and therefore must replace it with a clear man-made lens to reduce or even eliminate the need for glasses. The final goal is to provide the patient with vision that is more clear and bright. Today patients have an option amongst the various IOLs available. The standard IOL has been around for 20+ years and is safe and adequate in its results.

Contact Lenses or Eye Glasses?

And so the debate goes on as to whether contact lenses or eye glasses are the better choice. Both have their advantages over the other and both have their disadvantages and it is important to review these advantages and disadvantages because the eyes are very important in this seeing world that requires vision for proper function. If we cannot see properly, then we easily miss things, have difficulty reading, or can become seriously injured when in hazardous conditions. This is why it is necessary to carefully evaluate the contact lenses versus eye glass debate and figure out what side you are on. Contact lenses Contact lenses certainly have their advantages, which is why many choose them over their eye glasses. It is fair to say that when contacts were invented, they opened up a whole new world for those who had been wearing glasses for quite some time. When wearing glasses, we become used to how we see and we do not think anything of it. But throw in a pair of contacts and the eye glass wearer may wonder why they did not try contacts sooner.

Top Reasons to Wear Bi-Focal Sunglasses

Theses days, just about everyone wears sunglasses. For some people, they're a necessary part of the wardrobe, and their "look" wouldn't be complete without a pair. In fact, many people have several pairs - so that they'll have at least one to complement whatever outfit they are wearing. But sunglasses aren't always worn just to look cool. More importantly, they are used to protect the eyes from the negative effects of harsh sunlight and ultraviolet rays. Even though the sun is over 90 million miles away, it still poses serious ocular dangers to us all. A few of these dangerous and debilitating ocular conditions are Cataracts, Photokeratitis, Pterygium, and various eye cancers. Cataracts are a condition that clouds the lens of the eye, causing the image on the back of the eye to be blurred. Although this condition is typically develops as people age, it has been determined that people who wear sunglasses regularly have a decreased chance of developing this condition. Photokeratitis occurs when the cornea, the clear surface of the eye, is burned by powerful UVB rays.

Are Giant Pupils A Danger To Having Laser Eye Surgery?

Did you ever think that having giant pupils could disqualify you from being eligible for laser eye surgery? Well they might. The pupil is the opening or hole in the center of the iris that admits light. It's size changes in direct response to changes in lighting. In bright light conditions, the pupil gets smaller. In poor light conditions, or when it's dark, the pupil dilates or gets larger. Many people with larger than normal pupils are not even aware of it. If you are highly sensitive to bright lights, this is a good sign that your pupils may be larger than normal. However, it could also be the case that your enlarged pupil is the result of drug or medication interactions with your body. In this case, the condition is most likely temporary and your pupil under normal conditions could very well be normal in size. It's important to recognize the fact that the size of left and right pupils are not necessarily the same. Having said that, under normal lighting conditions the diameter of an average sized pupil is 3 millimeters.

Through a series of eye exercises designed to strengthen the eye muscles and the use of eyeglasses, vision therapists say they can improve your child's eyesight and his school performance. "Promoters say this regimen will improve scholastic and athletic performance, will increase a student's IQ, and may help keep youngsters from juvenile delinquency. They also claim that it can help with the problem of dyslexia (inability to interpret written language), " according to Dr. David E. Larson, editor-in-chief of the Mayo Clinic Family Health Book. The program offered by vision therapists is different from that of conventional optometrists and ophthalmologists. It includes exercises in hand-eye coordination, watching a series of blinking lights, focusing on certain objects, and sleeping in different positions.
