I see many individuals in my practice who have been impacted by chronic pain and have a tried a variety of western medical solutions to manage their pain with varying results. Some of these solutions are successful but few address the root causes of pain or offer a more holistic approach to healing. To complement western medical approaches or to use a purely eastern holistic approach try the following: Nutrition Reducing inflammation is a key approach to balancing the pain with nutrition. Anti-inflammatory foods include spices such as ginger, cinnamon, tumeric, flax seed oils, walnuts, whole brown rice, berries and other fruits that contain quercetin (also a natural antihistamine that improves allergies). Anti-inflammatory beverages include decaf green tea, chamomile tea (helps to soothe the nerves; brew it very strong at least 10-15 minutes for optimum effect), decaf chai tea, ginger tea, chrysanthemum and ginger tea combined, carrot with ginger juice. The beverages listed above can also help to detoxify the body, which is critical if one is taking pain medications.
As a health practitioner for many years I repeatedly ran into a phenomenon that some you may be familiar with. This phenomenon goes something like this. I develop a health problem, be it mental/emotional and/or physical. I go to see my health care practitioner and I get some understanding of the problem along with some form of treatment. The treatment either doesn't work or better still it works but only for a temporary period of time and then I experience a relapse. The relapse may not come immediately. Indeed it may not even be in the same form as the original problem. That is the relapsing symptoms may be very different. So I seek out the same or another health care practitioner (here the category of practitioner doesn't matter really) and I find myself going through the same scenario once again. Now many individuals find themselves going through this process many times, perhaps indefinitely until their body ultimately breaks down permanently, what we call death. Indeed many never realize that they are not actually getting better rather being distracted from ever realizing that there is a deeper problem that no one has recognized.
In this day and age it seems that more and more people are taking an interest in the various approaches that a person can take to alternative health. Between foot detox pads, spa wraps, cleansing of this organ and that organ-so many people have the ability to take their health into their own hands. Natural health practitioners are more in demand than ever before, and it seems that people have finally begun to grasp those alternative practices. Foot detox pads are just one of many tools that can be picked up for alternative health, but they are one of the easiest to use. You don't have to administer some cleanse, you don't have to visit a spa, and you don't have to go through a whole bunch of changes to get the benefit. Read on for more information on how foot detox pads work so that you can see if they are a good option for your alternative health. Needless to say, the first step in using foot detox pads is cleaning the body thoroughly. Many people wash just the bottoms of the feet, but a completely clean body from head to toe is always a good idea in such an instance.
Even though genes play a vital role in determining the kind of diseases or conditions a person may be prone to, the person's choice of food is also crucial in the development of illnesses and other diseases. Everything that gets into the mouth must be considered carefully because what a person eats--and drinks--will ultimately determine whether he or she is susceptible to serious lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes, heart ailments and many others. Aside from drinking plenty of water, eating judiciously, and exercising regularly, people should also consider undergoing detoxification, a process which can eliminate toxins and other harmful substances that have accumulated inside the body. Here are some ways on how you can detoxify. Eat Plenty Of Fiber People who do not eat vegetables usually are constipated and they find it difficult to pass stool. Ideally, a person has to move bowels at least once a day so that no fecal matter or waste materials are left inside the gut to rot.
Holistic medicine, or "holistic health", is a belief that physical and mental aspects of life are closely connected and factor into the overall health and wellness of a person. Holistic health is usually associated with the topic of alternative medicine, but it is becoming more mainstream in this day and age. The concept of holistic health is not new. Holism has been around for ages, but it has only been integrated into mainstream healthcare recently. There is a certain element of stubborness in the medical field and sometimes it is slow to accept new ways of treatment or thinking. Holistic medicine is more an approach to how individuals should be treated, as opposed to a treatment method in and of itself. Practicers believe that maintaining good health is more than simply taking care of the different parts of our physical bodies and it incorporates emotional and spiritual aspects as well. The overall goal of holistic medicine is entire wellness, not simply a lack of disease or physical pain.
Holism is the concept or belief that all of the properties of a system cannot be explained by the component parts alone. Rather, the system as a unit determines how the parts behave. The saying, "the whole is more than the sum of its parts", summarizes things nicely. The term "holism" came about when a statesman from South Africa named Jan Smuts wrote about the concept in a book. The definition that he gave to holism was "the tendency in nature to form wholes that are greater than the sum of the parts through creative evolution." The concept of holism has ancient roots. Examples can be found throughout human history. Scientific holism teaches that the behavior of a single system can't be predicted, regardless of how much data is readily available. In medicine, the holistic approach views biological, social, and psychological factors with importance when it comes to overall health and wellness. A disturbance or irregularity on any of those levels will have an effect in other areas as well.

Chinese medicine consists of two distinct parts: the empirical herbal knowledge, and the abstract medical theories. For a review, please see my two articles explaining each part. The theory of Yin Yang can be interpreted in many ways. The Chinese term literally means "dark, bright". It shows the contrasts between two different characteristics existing in our world. In this article, I wish to present a practical interpretation of this theory to help enhance the objectivity and practicality of Chinese medicine. What do we mean by Yin Yang? Yin Yang represents two opposite characteristics existing in this world. Yin means: dark, cold, female, night, water, descending, contracting, etc. Yang means bright, hot, male, day, fire, ascending, expanding, etc. Yin Yang shows that opposing forces can coexist for our benefit. Since all opposing things exist in abundance, it seems that they are roughly in balance and harmony for the long term. Yin and Yang blend together to produce a natural balance.
Imagine your typical day: You get up in the morning and brush your teeth with toothpaste. Then you have a shower; you use shower gel or soap, shampoo, conditioner and shaving cream. After you've dried yourself off, you apply moisturizer to your skin, makeup to your face and perhaps some hair gel, mousse or hairspray. A final spritz of perfume or cologne, an application of deodorant, and you're ready for breakfast. You have your usual breakfast of cereal with milk and grab an apple for the road. You're feeling pretty good and refreshed, you're clean, you smell nice and you've just kicked off your metabolism for the day with a nutritious and healthy breakfast. Well, that's one way of looking at it. What you're probably not aware of is the phenomenal amount of toxins you've just absorbed or ingested in your body within your first hour of waking. The skin is the body's largest organ and it is very efficient at absorbing and transporting to the blood and cells whatever it comes into contact with.
