How Safe is Your Water?

Everyone should be interested in water purification. But, does everyone need their own water purifier? According to the companies that sell water purifiers, everyone needs to filter what comes out of the tap, before they drink it. You can not always trust the advertising hype, but in this case, it is probably true. Here are just some of the facts.

According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, water purification plants are "old and out of date". Contamination with chemicals and micro-organisms is common. A state of the art home water purifier can address the issues that our old, out-dated public systems can not.

According to Carol Browner, US EPA Chief, the way that they guarantee that what remains after municipal water purification is safe to drink is "broken and needs to be fixed". The EPA and other public health organizations would like the government to do something to "fix" the problem. While we are waiting for that to happen, the only thing we can do is invest in our own health, by investing in our own water purifiers.

Cryptosporidium is a deadly microorganism that threatens the lives or over 45 million Americans. Government officials say that no matter how good the public water purification system is, there is no guarantee that cryptosporidium will not be present. A home water purifier that can block cysts would remove the threat.

Residue of 39 different pesticides has been found in 34 different states with so-called safe water purification. Pesticides are not something that you would want to drink under any circumstances. But, unless you have water purifiers that remove pesticides and other chemical contaminants, then you could be doing just that.

Herbicides or weed killers have been found flowing out of the kitchen taps in 28 out of 29 cities tested. The Environmental Working Group Report is called, "Weed killers by the Glass" and it's scary. There is no one who would want their children to have weed-killers in their Kool-Aid. But, the only way to protect the kids is with a carbon activated, carbon block water purifier.

Then there is the toxic lead. We do not allow lead based paints in this country, because lead consumption causes birth defects, learning disabilities and a host of other health problems. In the US EPA Report Summary, it was concluded that lead in drinking water is responsible for 480,000 cases of learning disorders in children and 560,000 cases of hypertension (high blood pressure) in adult males.

No matter how good your local water purification facility is at its job, it can not protect you from lead. The contamination occurs after the water leaves the facility. Of the many water purifiers on the market, only some of them block lead. You have to check certified performance data sheets to be sure. The California Health Department Certification for water purifiers requires the most stringent and extensive testing. If you find that seal of approval, you have likely found the best home water purifier on the market.

Complete water purification can only be accomplished if you get involved. Be careful what you dump outside or wash down the drain and make sure that what your kids have to drink is safe.
