Lemon Myrtle - More Lemon Than Lemon

Lemon myrtle (Backhousia citriodora) is in the myrtle family of botanical plants. We get the oil trough steam distillation of the leaves of this plant. Lemon myrtle is a large shrub that grows mainly in the rain forests of coastal Queensland from Brisbane to Cairns in Australia. It has a fresh, clean lemony fragrance that many describe as more lemon than lemon itself.

How Can Lemon Myrtle Essential Oil Benefit Us Today?

Lemon myrtle is an extremely potent antibacterial and germicide. It is a much more effective germ killer than the more familiar Tea Tree. Anecdotal evidence shows a much lower than expected number of coughs, colds and sinus problems in households that regularly diffuse the oil. Its fresh, clean citrus note is very uplifting and therefore helpful for clarity of thought and concentration. It is mentally rejuvenating. Lemon myrtle is also good for the skin particularly for clearing up acne.

How Can This Oil Be Used on the Body?

This is a relatively new oil available out of Australia and not enough study has been conducted on it. Therefore, I recommend diluting it one part essential oil to four parts carrier oil until you know how your skin will react. As for safety, lemon myrtle contains a fair amount of citral, neral and citronellal-all aldehydes and therefore could potentially be a skin irritant.
