Plant Allergy
Plant allergy occurs when a child's bare skin makes contact with a plant to which he or she is allergic. The contact with the plant can be very brief, lasting only seconds, and often happens when the child runs past a bush which brushes against the skin. Shortly afterwards, usually starting after a couple of hours, the skin becomes itchy, and red, blistery streaks appear, corresponding to the areas touched by the plant. This worsens gradually over the next few days, with patches coming up all over the place-anywhere the plant touched. If untreated the problem can take two weeks or more to settle.
Many plants can cause this kind of allergy, but there are only a couple which very commonly do this. One is the rhus tree, and the other is the grevillea bush, most often the verypopular grevillea Robyn Gordon' which is planted in so many parks and school playgrounds.
Adults are just as prone to this type of allergy, which we call contact allergy because it is the result of contact of an allergy-causing substance (the allergen) with the skin. However adults often develop this as a result of contact with medications, cosmetics, perfumes and industrial chemicals-things that children don't come into contact with. Adults, on the other hand, don't tend to go running or rolling through the bushes in their swimming costumes, nor do they usually climb trees. This is why plants are the commonest cause of contact allergy in children.
A severe attack of plant allergy usually requires treatment with cortisone, and this needs to be carefully supervised by your doctor.
