Which City Is The Worst For Spring Seasonal Allergies?

Every year the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America rates which cities are the worst for spring seasonal allergies. The list changes each year because of weather patterns but some cities seem to make a appearance on the list year after year. Now the drum roll please, maybe you can blame that Kentucky blue grass.

Congratulations Lexington, Kentucky you have been named the worst city for spring seasonal allergies for 2008 or the allergy capital of the United States as the city that is named number one is often called. Last year Lexington came in at 52 but 2008 has been a very wet spring and propelled Lexington to number one this year. Lexington was also named number one in 2005 but had better years in 2006 and 2007. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America looks at four factors when ranking their list of cities; allergy prevalence, seasonal pollen levels, allergy medication use per patient, and the number of board-certified allergy specialists per patient.

Most of the top names this year came from cities on the east coast and mid west. The top city on the west coast was San Diego which ranked as the 10th worst in the United States. West coast cities generally suffer more allergy problems in the summer and fall months when the weather becomes very hot and dry. Many areas of Texas are also problematic for allergy sufferers.

Those who suffer spring seasonal allergies and are moving or planning a trip might want to review the list and even go back and look at the past 3 or 4 years and see if your city ranks consistently high in the list of 100 top cities.
