How To Choose The Perfect Acne Treatment?
While there are several treatments available for acne it cannot be said with any certainty what will work for some and what will not. And also there is no single cure for acne. To this effect doctors will have to juggle around with the various treatments before finding the right treatment or combination of treatments to clear up the problem. Every case of acne is different and depending on the individual will cause different changes to the skin. Thus acne is often a difficult condition to manage. A lot of trial and error and experimentation is the mantra before hitting paydirt! Thus it can be very frustrating for the individual concerned especially for the ones who want a quick-fix solution!
Always consult your doctor or dermatologist for the management of stubborn acne. There are some definite things to avoid when it comes to acne management. Never scrub the skin affected by acne. This irritates and inflames the acne leading to more pimples thus delaying the healing process further. Do not self-treat or self-medicate. Pimple removal should be best left to a trained doctor and done in an aseptic environment. Most often doctors will recommend a topical cream as an initial treatment. These creams will not cure acne but will lessent the symptoms of acne.
Treatments will vary according to the symptoms. It will be aimed at unplugging the pores, killing bacteria by using antibiotics, reducing the amount of oils secreted by the skin (Accutane-loke products) or altering the hormones that stimulate the sebaceous glands (oral contraceptives). If topical preparations are ineffective then an oral antibiotic will be added to the regime. Most topical creams contain Benzoyl Peroxide in small amounts. Initially thought to be harmless, it is now documented to cause premature ageing of the skin.
The most important aspect of acne management is to work in co-ordination with a trained medical professional and also to exercise some patience. There is no overnight solution to acne management. Also remember that when you do hit upon an effective combination the treatment will sometimes lead to flare-ups of acne before solving the problem. Thus it is often seen that patients do need to be on treatment for at least 4-6 weeks before expecting some results. Never be disappointed if one treatment does not work. Expect to try out several treatments before settling on one that works.
