Automobile Accidents and Whiplash
Getting involved in an automobile accident is a traumatic experience. The sudden jar can incite panic, which can be exacerbated by an intense adrenaline rush. Under these extreme conditions, many people do not realize the extent of their injuries and refuse medical assistance. Unfortunately, some injuries take a few days before victims begin experiencing symptoms.
Whiplash
During an auto accident, occupants are oftentimes forced in one direction because of a collision. This sudden jolt can cause excessive stress on an occupant's back and neck, resulting in whiplash; however, they may not feel symptoms until a few days later.
Symptoms
When involved in an automobile accident, it is important to be aware of the symptoms of whiplash. Many sufferers complain of:
Stiffness or swelling in the back or neck
Dull aches in back and/or neck
Headache
Dizziness
Sharp, shooting pain that limits movement
Muscle spasm through the sides of your back and neck
Pain in shoulders and arms
Depending on the force of impact, victims' symptoms may range from mild to severe.
Treatment
If you have been involved in a car accident, it is a good idea to receive medical treatment immediately following the accident, even if you are not initially experiencing symptoms. Because of the fragility of the neck and back, getting checked for injury may reduce suffering and prevent additional damage. When transported from the accident site to an emergency facility, you may be placed in a neck brace to prevent movement.
Once you arrive at an emergency facility and are seen by a doctor, they will most likely check your neck and back for exterior trauma, such as cuts and abrasions. If this is clear, they will assess your spinal cord for damage or weakness. They may ask you to move in certain ways, and press on certain spots to see if it results in pain. After a brief analysis they will determine whether or not you should receive an x-ray to check for any fractures or breaks that could require surgery to fix.
If you do not need x-rays, the collar will most likely be removed and you will be further assessed for a treatment plan. Depending on the cause for your discomfort and the severity of injury, the doctor may send you home with treatment plan that may include:
Applying ice or heat to the affected area
Rest
Temporary immobilization, by means of a neck brace
Massage
Pain reliever/anti-inflammatory, such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen
Range of movement exercises
