Caution - An Elevated Uric Acid Level Could Result in Gouty Arthritis
An elevated uric acid level (U.A.) can be a serious problem if allowed to continue. If you don't believe me just ask one of the 3 million individuals whose elevated uric acid level has lead to a type of arthritis known as gouty arthritis (gout, the gout). While gout is not the most widely known type of arthritis it is perhaps the most painful, and whether you are one of the three million currently struggling with the disease, or you have an elevated U.A. level which puts you in the high risk category of acquiring the condition, steps should be taken to normalize, or at the very least reduce, high uric acid content in the blood.
While many have read about certain foods that promote elevated uric acid levels it is often overlooked that this substance is actually a naturally occurring waste product in the body caused by cell nucleic breakdown. This is a fancy way of saying that when cells die they produce toxins. Under normal circumstances these toxins are filtered out by the kidneys and sent on their way through urination. But sometimes situations arise which in which abnormally large amounts of uric acid are produced and/or ingested overwhelming the kidneys ability to effectively filter the toxin. At this point the probability of uric acid deposits forming increases dramatically. In fact when the serum uric acid level (blood minus blood cells) exceeds 9 mg/100 ml the chance of an acute gout attack is greater than ninety percent. Putting this in perspective for serum uric acid levels below 6 mg/100 ml. there is less than a one percent chance of suffering an attack of gouty arthritis. As you can see an modest rise dramatically increases ones chances of acquiring this painful disease.
The causes of an elevated uric acid level are classified into two categories; primary and secondary. The primary causes are foods high in purines such as organ meats and shellfish and decreased kidney clearance of uric acid. The secondary causes are too broad to list here but a few examples are cancers, blood disorders, certain drugs, hypothyroidism, extreme crash diets, and obesity.
What Next? Attacks of the gout caused by elevated U.A. levels are a serious matter and should not be ignored. Believing that somehow the initial attack was just a fluke is a mistake. Statistics show that after the initial attack secondary attacks are likely, but predicting when they will occur and their severity has yet to be perfected.
While avoid recurrent attacks may be difficult there are three steps that can be implemented at home to reduce your chances of having a gout attack. First, reduce the intake of purine laden foods such as shellfish and organ meats; second, drink plenty of fresh water (6 eight ounce glasses a day); and last but not least implement an alternative gout remedy containing the natural ingredients turmeric and milk thistle. By implementing these three steps you will have made great strides on the path to avoiding future attacks.
