Allergies - How They Come About

When your body reacts to a substance in the environment that is usually not harmful, this is said to be an allergic reaction. Allergies are disorders of the immune system and are also called atopy. These environmental harmless substances that will cause the reactions are called allergens. Allergies are a form of hypersensitivity that is triggered by many factors in different people. The top examples of allergic reactions include the following. There is eczema, hay fever, hives, asthma, a wide range of food allergies and the list goes on.

In general, allergies will not be harmful when managed properly but, if there are complications and lack of quick intervention in severe cases, they pose a great threat to life. There are so many things that people can do to make sure that allergies are kept under control. The best thing to do is to avoid the notorious allergens as much as possible. However, medications are also available to control the problem no matter what kind of reaction it is. The following are some of the medications available to treat the reactions.

When it comes to oral medications, there are anti-histamines, steroids and many others. There are other targeted therapies that will be employed to rid this problem. Apart from environmental factors being the cause, there are also other factors worth a mention where allergies are concerned. Host factors that house heredity, sex, age, and race also come to play. Change in allergen levels and dietary factors are also big culprits when it comes to causing the problem.

Allergies depending on the kind will present with many symptoms. For example, when it comes to allergic rhinitis or hay fever, those affected will suffer a red and runny nose, sneezing, itching, irritation in the eyes and so on. Regarding food allergies, those affected will experience abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, itchy skin, swelling, hives and many other examples. These symptoms are quite elaborate and will be noticed almost immediately after contact with allergens.

There are so many examples of allergens that can be mentioned in your environment and they may include pollen, house dust, tree pollen, ragweed, pets, mold, latex, grass pollen, dust mites, cockroaches, cigarettes and the list is endless. The best thing to do when you notice you are prone to certain allergies is to consult a doctor.

Make sure that these factors that trigger your problem are eliminated from your space. Also, follow up on medications provided and you will manage the allergies. When you are suffering from another health condition, always inform your doctor or any other health care provider about all your allergies. In case you are allergic to medications like aspirin, you will avoid common pitfalls with this respect.
