On site optimization is the development of each page making it as readable and understandable as possible without detracting from the main purpose of the website. Some sites can be over optimized and loose any sales potential.

The key areas of optimization are the; title tag, description tag, heading tag and website copy.

The title tag is one of the most important areas for seo. This should always contain the main keywords for the website and should always start with the main keyword. Ideally the tag should be no longer than 10 words long, to keep it concise and relevant.

The description tag is not the place to stuff lots of the sites keywords in a poor attempt at spammy search engine optimization. Its main purpose is to sell the click on the link in the search engine results page. Think of ways you can write it as a concise sales message similar to and AdWords advert.

The heading tag should be the first item Google reads when it views the webpage. There are six levels of headings from heading 1 to heading 6. The heading 1 tag should contain the site headline and the sites main keywords. The heading 3 tag should be used for subheadings which also contain site keywords.

The website copy needs to be written with the search engines in mind. It is no good wanting to achieve top rankings for keywords which are not even written in the copy of the site. Each main keyword should be mentioned in the copy 3-6 times per scroll of the page.

The internet is pushing the boundaries of business, and is therefore extremely important for every entrepreneur, business owner or marketer to have a good grasp of what needs to be done to get the website to the top.
