How Did They Steal My Product?!
"The goal of education is the advancement of knowledge and the dissemination of truth." - John Fitzgerald Kennedy
Selling digital products online is a great way to make money without a lot of manual interaction. However, there is dark side to this gleaming system. Easily people can and are STEALING your products. There are people out there that want your product, but don't want to pay for it; It's sad but true. Now we all know that search engines play a crucial factor in the successful sales of your products. What you are about to find out is how they are also a powerful tool for would be thieves.
"When Bots Attack"
As many of you may know, search engines use bots to spider your site crawling over every bit (or rather "byte" for you techies) of data on your website. You spend a lot of time to include relevant content to rank higher in search engine listings provided by Google, Yahoo, etc... Here in lies the very root of the problem that allows someone to "hack" and actually STEAL your products. These spiders are indiscriminate in their thirst for data and inadvertently will index your actual digital products themselves.
"Is this really possible?", you ask yourself. YES, indeed it is. For example, go to the Google homepage and type in "site: www.yourdomainhere.com". Don't be surprised if you see your product listed. If you do not see it listed then don't be lulled into a false sense of security but be shocked to know there are other ways still to STEAL your product using similar techniques.
"The Vendor Strikes Back"
"How can i protect myself", should be a thought that comes to mind. There are ways to set up a defense. One basic way is to use a "robots.txt" file in the root of your site. This will instruct search engines what site directories to not include in their indexes and thus avoid your product location. Details on this procedure can be found at: http://www.robotstxt.org/robotstxt.html. Now, I have to report some bad news... not all of the spiders play by the rules (there is no official standards body for the robots.txt protocol). Also, there is an important weakness that may be exploited from this technique. The good news is measures can be put in place to virtually eliminate the theft of your products.
