Supplies And Demand - A Quick Guide To Getting Supplies For Your Online Crafts Store
Many fledgling online craftspeople find it difficult to get the supplies they need to work with-particularly for jewelry. Supplies can range from specifics for your business, such as chains for jewelry, to the more mundane shipping and packaging supplies. One of the most frustrating unexpected challenges of starting up online is where to get these supplies in the quantity needed at a price that's affordable. Below are a few tips for ensuring that you have the proper materials to build, assemble, and ship your businesses' wares.
For jewelry, a great place to start can be one of the larger companies which feature the type of pieces you prefer to work with. Many of these supply on eBay, which is always a smart place to begin, as the sheer size of the marketplace means you can find just about everything you're looking for at a reasonable price. Be aware, however, that if you want to grow your business, and work with larger quantities, eBay can be more expensive in the long run-it's better to start there, see if you can gather some suppliers, and then order larger orders directly from them.
Catalogue companies. If you're working with a particular type of material, say necklaces with gems-it's smart to try and find some catalogue suppliers. A Google search should net you the names of a few companies who sell via catalogues-sign up and see if the price meets what you need. Some catalogue sellers are able to offer you both larger quantities and bigger bulk discounts on those larger orders, both of which are great advantages when your orders are coming thick and fast.
Local sourcing, while more labor intensive, can provide you with some fun and unique pieces you wouldn't find otherwise. Garage sales, car boots, estate sales-all these can hold treasures for the creative crafts person And while you're unlikely to find the bulk quantities that you would get from other supply routes, it can provide you with cheap and rare pieces that you can sell as exclusives, giving the customer a one-of-a-kind product, which increases it's value significantly
One small warning, if you are ordering abroad, be prepared for customs charges. Most countries have a certain ceiling (for example, purchases of more than $50 may be required to pay customs tax) and if that ceiling is exceeded, customs will assign a charge which will be payable either to you directly, or which you'll have to pay the post office in order to receive the package. While this shouldn't be a deterrent for ordering pieces from abroad (in fact, pieces from abroad often sell better) it is something to bear in mind when considering cost and costings.
While buying for your business can be daunting, finding suppliers is a matter of tenacity and willingness to try different outlets for getting supplies. While most supplies can be picked up at eBay or other distribution sites, it's often cheaper in the long run to go for bulk discounts with catalogue companies or try to locate the eBay distributors directly. Be wary, however, of customs charges, which are applicable on large overseas orders. You can also track down unique pieces from local sources, and make a garage sale-ing adventure into a chance to find some individual pieces for your collection.
