Ebook Covers - Never Underestimate First Impressions
There's an old saying that you should never judge a book by its cover. Nice sentiment but it's baloney. In the real world people do precisely that, instantly. They may not do it consciously but they'll make a snap judgment on your entire content based solely on the appearance of your ebook cover.
Fact is, like it or not you only get one chance to make a good impression. If you don't make it count you're letting customers walk out the door.
Period.
To compound the problem, a lot of ebook authors and publishers fancy themselves as designers as well and 'have a bash' at doing the cover themselves. If you've been looking into the ebook business for any length of time you'll have seen the results.
Now I'm not going to be gentle with you here. It's too important. If you're one of the ones who thinks "how hard can it be" or fancies themselves as a graphic artist then do yourself a favour, get someone else to do it. Someone who's properly qualified.
You can get a decent ebook cover done for around $50.00. Maybe less. You ought to cover that in no more than half a dozen ebook sales. I guarantee you'll lose more than that if your cover gives the wrong impression.
Of course many writers are quite creative. If that's true in your case then there are some superb ebook cover software programs around that will take a flat design that you put together and turn it into a superb three dimension image in just a couple of mouse clicks. Not just ebook covers either but software boxes, CD and DVD labels, Stacks of books, all kinds of very clever stuff. They're fast, realistic and they're inexpensive too.
So for the price of getting someone else to do an ebook cover or two you can get software to do it yourself.
But please be honest about your efforts. Be tough on yourself.
Once you've designed your ebook cover take a look at what other people are doing. Visit a dozen different sites and see the sort of quality they're putting out. See what impression they are giving about their ebooks.
If there's someone whose point of view you trust, who can look at your design objectively and will give you a straight answer (not massage your ego), run it by them.
If any of those things make you wonder if it's good enough then sorry, it isn't. Either improve it or go back to plan A, get someone else to do it for you.
