Why Make a Credit Card Comparison?

Credit cards are a useful addition to any purse or wallet in that they allow for a ready source of finance should an emergency require instant funds, or if you need to make an unplanned purchase that you can't cover with cash. Whilst some people never experience any problems with their plastic cards, there are plenty more who find that this small piece of plastic comes to dominate their life. This has especially been the case since the global economic crisis took hold, forcing many people into unavoidable debt, and causing them to use their cards where they may not have done so previously.

This has meant that the rates and fees on these cards have recently become more relevant. Carrying a credit card debt with an interest rate of 15% can really hurt a person, and when this can be exchanged for a zero rate balance transfer for six months, or 2-3% for a year, then it's foolish not to make that change.

This is the main reason why making a comparison of cards is important. It allows a person to understand all the options available, and exactly what the market has to offer. As times have been more difficult, credit card providers have been falling over themselves to secure your custom, making all sorts of attractive offers. As the economic situation eases, it has been apparent in recent months that rates have been gently creeping upwards again. Unless you make a comparison of cards right now, it may well be many years before such fantastic deals appear again in such abundance.

Amazingly, though, even in the midst of the economic problems, the 2009 Australian Consumer Credit & Banking Survey revealed that 58.8% of consumers only applied to their existing bank for a new card, and only 6% bothered comparing the market via a comparison website. With this type of attitude, banks and providers can easily become complacent when it comes to renewing your credit card upon expiry. The best deals are reserved for new customers who have actually made the effort to track them down.

Making a credit card comparison means you will know that you have done all you can to minimise your credit card costs. Even if you never go into debt therefore never pay any interest, you can still save money by switching to a card that does not charge an annual fee.
