Lap-Band Weight-Loss Surgery Can Reverse Metabolic Syndrome In Obese Teens

A new study of obese adolescents has shown that laparoscopic gastric banding surgery -- the "Lap-Band" procedure -- not only helps them achieve significant weight loss but can also improve and even reverse metabolic syndrome, reducing their risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Metabolic syndrome is defined as a cluster of risk factors -- high blood pressure; low levels of HDL or "good" cholesterol; excessive abdominal fat; and elevated levels of blood sugar, C-reactive protein and triglycerides -- that increase a person's chances of developing cardiovascular disease or diabetes later in life. The single biggest risk factor is obesity, and metabolic syndrome usually improves when a person loses weight.

Medtronic Voluntarily Recalls Specific Lots Of Paradigm R Quick-Set R Infusion Sets In The United States

Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE:MDT) said that it has initiated a recall of specific lots of Quick-set® infusion sets that are used with MiniMed Paradigm insulin pumps. An infusion set is a thin plastic tube used to deliver insulin from an insulin pump to a diabetes patient, and is typically replaced by the patient every three days. Affected infusion sets are reference numbers MMT-396, MMT-397, MMT-398 and MMT-399 with lot numbers starting with the number "8." Medtronic recently discovered that approximately two percent of "Lot 8" Quick-set infusion sets (which represents approximately 60, 000 infusion sets out of an estimated 3 million infusion sets currently with customers) may not work properly.

Shedding New Light On The Causes Of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome And Its Effect On Brothers

Researchers have found evidence that chronic disease in either a mother or father can create unfavourable conditions in the womb that are associated with the development of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) in daughters. In another study, researchers found that brothers of women with PCOS and insulin resistance are themselves at greater risk of developing insulin resistance or diabetes, suggesting that factors associated with the condition can be passed down to sons as well as daughters. The two studies were presented to the 25th annual meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Amsterdam. Associate Professor Michael Davies told a news briefing: "We already know from clinical studies of women with reproductive problems that foetal growth restriction is associated with the development of PCOS symptoms in daughters, and that problems during pregnancy and in the way the mother adapts to the metabolic challenge of pregnancy can indicate the future cardiovascular health of both the mother and the child.

Study Indicates Support Group Attendance Improves Post-Surgical Weight Loss

Major scientific contributors within the bariatric and psychiatric industries publicized the results of a recent study demonstrating that LAP-BAND(R) patients who regularly attend support groups experience considerably higher rates of post-surgical weight loss. Authors Dr. Kathryn A. Kaiser, Dr. Susan Franks and Dr. Adam Smith discussed their findings at the 26th Annual American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Meeting. Published last month in Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases (Vol. 5, Issue 3), the study divided gastric banding patients into groups based on frequency of attendance and then calculated the percent of excess weight lost 12 months after surgery.

New Role Discovered For Molecule Important In Development Of The Pancreas

For years researchers have been searching for a way to treat diabetics by reactivating their insulin-producing beta cells, to no avail. Now, they may be one step closer. A protein, whose role in pancreatic development has long been recognized, has been discovered to play an additional and previously unknown regulatory role in the development of cells in the immature endocrine system. These cells ultimately give rise to pancreatic islet cells, which include beta cells. By carefully defining the developmental steps and genetic circuits that lead to mature beta cells, researchers may be able to one day mimic these developmental processes, thereby facilitating beta-cell growth in the lab, and eventually, new therapies.

Researcher Works To Help Mexican Americans With Type 2 Diabetes

Starr County, Texas, sits on the Texas-Mexico border along the banks of the Rio Grande River. Populated largely by Mexican Americans, it is a rural county where some of the residents live in colonias, unincorporated areas with no city services. The county seat, Rio Grande City, is home to approximately 15, 000 people. Scratch the surface and Starr County has one surprising distinguishing feature: one of the highest prevalence rates of type 2 diabetes in the entire country, and the highest diabetes death rate in Texas. Type 2 diabetes is now being designated a world-wide epidemic, and increasing prevalence rates in the United States are causing great concern.
