Explain What You Did at Your Last Job and WOW Them
Ask yourself, if someone came up to you and asked you what you did for a living what would you say? I'm a Production Supervisor for the Widget Corporation, but I'm so much more than that, unfortunately I'm not able to share it! I mean does saying you're a Production Supervisor explain that last year your department made 1 million dollars in cost savings without the loss of a single job? Does it share the story that as a Production Supervisor from February to March you trained 129 new employees for the FORD 500 expansion program, and you have had a 100% retention rate with no quality rejects during or in the preceding 6 months?
Again ask yourself, 'what do you do for a living?' Your answer should be to share a story. Why? Again, to share your value, we all know that we can't explain in detail everything we do in any given day to anyone, including our bosses. There is just so much that we do in our job that it would take forever to explain to someone else.
So how do you share your value, in just a few sentences, with a story that's how? We all know of course you aren't sharing all the other 500 tasks and responsibilities that you complete every day. You can't its impossible, so you have to find and share stories that capture some outstanding examples of your ability and your high level of performance.
Because when they walk away that's what you want them to remember. Not just that you are a Production Supervisor, but someone who saved the company 1.2 million dollars in cost savings without the loss of a single job, 'WOW'.
That's worth remembering, wouldn't you say? Now what do you believe their response would be immediately after you share this story with them?
Let me share with you what they will say, 'Wow how did you do that?' Cha-ching, that's what we want. The 'How' that's what you can do for them, you can give them the answer you can do the same thing for them. That's your true value to a prospective employer, you can give them the answer, more importantly you'll have them asking you how did you do that? And will you do something like that for my company?
This is the bread and butter phrase we want. Ask yourself this, what do you think you look like, to this person asking HOW? An expert that's what, remember they are asking how, and that alone positions you as the expert.
Good Luck and let me know if I can help.
